Welding Techniques

About the Program

TTG’s Welding Techniques program is a foundational course which is designed for individuals who want to gain essential welding skills but are not registered as apprentices. Running concurrently with our Level 1 Welder/Metal Fabricator Apprenticeship (Common Core) in-class training, this program provides a pathway to explore and learn the fundamentals of welding and metal fabrication.

Trainees will learn the theory and practical applications of various welding processes, blueprint reading, trade math and safety protocols. This course is ideal for career-changers, high school graduates, or newcomers looking to enter the Ontario manufacturing workforce.

It is expected that program graduates will be prepared to enter the workforce as a Welder or Fabricator following the completion of this program.

This program is divided into two semesters and a minimum overall grade average of 70% is required at the end of semester 1 in order to proceed to semester 2.

Prerequisites:  

Applicants must meet the following requirements for program consideration:

• Canadian citizens: An Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD);  an Academic and Career Entrance (ACE) grade 12 Equivalency Certificate; an Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC); or be a Mature applicant.
• Newcomers: Must be a Canadian Citizen; have Permanent Residency (PR) status; or have a PR application in progress; or be a Refugee. Must provide proof of Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level of 6 or higher in all areas, and educational equivalencies (i.e. ICAS or WES Assessment).
• Must be able to provide your own PPE (safety glasses, steel toed boots, hearing protection) and welding gear (coat, gloves, welding helmet) and basic tools. A list of all required PPE and tools will be provided upon registration confirmation.

Program Outcomes

Upon successful completion, trainees will:

• Understand Trade practice and how to work safely in an industrial environment, adhering to OHSA and WHMIS standards.
• Perform trade-related mathematical calculations and technical measurements using appropriate tools and devices.
• Interpret trade-specific blueprints and technical drawings.
• Demonstrate basic proficiency in SMAW (Stick), GMAW (MIG), and Thermal cutting.
• Have an understanding of the fundamentals of weld theory and weld quality
• Able to perform basic fabrication of projects using drawings.
• Be prepared for entry-level welding and metal fabrication roles and potentially transition into a formal Apprenticeship.

Schedule:
Tuesday & Thursday nights (6pm – 10pm)

Duration:
Semester #1: September- January (Follows Level 1 Apprenticeship Calendar)
Semester #2: January – June (Follows Level 1 Apprenticeship Calendar)

• *Trainees must achieve a minimum overall mark of 70% in Semester 1, in order to enrol in Semester #2.
• Total program costs are approximate and subject to change. They do not include additional fees such as CWB Testing or required PPE and Welding gear and tools.
