This is an introductory Gas Tungsten Arc welding (GTAW / TIG) welding course for trainees with little to no GTAW welding experience.

This 24- hour Introductory course will involve stand-up theory, combined with hands-on practical exposure to both high-frequency (pedal) start as well as scratch start welding on mild steel.

For those participants who plan to enrol for the Ontario Welder Practical Assessment, class #5 and #6 will also provide instruction and practice for performing the GTAW portion of the Ontario Welder Practical Assessment.

PLEASE NOTE: This course serves as an introduction to TIG welding; however, it requires participants to possess prior welding experience (e.g., Stick or MIG). A solid understanding of fundamental welding principles is a prerequisite for successful completion.

Curriculum:

CLASS #1

SAFETY OF WELDING

  • Proper helmet, gloves, boots, pants, shirt, skin burn
  • Eye protection, glasses, flash and treatment
  • Lung Protection. No welding on painted steel lead, mercury, zinc paint
  • Welding galvanized steel, milk treatment
  • Shock protection, no welding in water, no wet gloves
  • Fire safety, rags, paint cans, saw dust fire or explosion
  • Gas bottle, construction, valve brass, seat regulator, open bottle slow, set flow
  • Handle bottle safety, chain up, move only with regulator off and shipping cap on
  • Move with bottle cart or by hand, shipping cap on
  • Cap comes off only when restrained

WELD MACHINE

  • Basic operation, weld torch, ground clamp, filler metal, foot pedal
  • Amperage control (Heat)
  • Function of torch, collet, collet body, ceramic cup, back cap
  • Cleaning ceramic cups, replacing consumables
  • Clipping off filler metal, pliers
  • Function of shielding gas, how it works and why its used
  • Air movement and porosity, higher gas pressure

PRACTICAL

  • Review GTAW welding Techniques

CLASS #2

PRACTICAL WELDING

  • Proper torch orientation
  • Proper Tungsten sharpening
  • Arc initiation methods
  • Run stringer beads on flat plate
  • Lap Joints on flat plates

CLASS #3

PRACTICAL WELDING

  • Review Stringer bead and lap joints horizontal
  • Fillet welds on tee joints flat and horizontal
  • Start Groove plates with backing in flat and horizontal (Time permitting)

CLASS #4

PRACTICAL WELDING

  • Multi-pass on Groove plates with backing in flat and horizontal
  • Open root groove plates
  • Open root, fill and cap

CLASS #5/6

PRACTICAL WELDING

  • Continued practice/ refinement of all GTAW welding techniques
  • Practice on different materials based on trainee’s and /or employer needs, if required *Material/parts to be provided by participants*
  • For those taking this course in preparation for the Ontario Welder Practical Assessment, this class can also be designated as practice time to perform some test plates in preparation for taking the OWP
  • Skills Assessment: At conclusion of this course a practical test will be administered for verification of successful basic skills upgrade. **This is NOT a certification**

Due to limited availability, registrations will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. To secure your spot in the course, you must register online via the form below and we will notify you if a spot is available and we will then issue an invoice. Payment will then be required to secure your spot.

  2. Once we confirm a spot is available, you will be invoiced, and Full Payment must be provided to secure your spot.

Payment (Once you receive an invoice)

  • Option #1: Interac email-transfer: MANDATORY: Include your full name and email address in "Comment" field.  
  • Option #2: Certified Cheque or Money Order (payable to Technical Training Group).

An administrative fee of 15% is charged for withdrawals. A refund of 85% will be given if a registrant withdraws within a minimum of 5 business days prior to the first day of class. Following this, fees are non-refundable.

Acceptance Notification

If there are spaces in the course still available, an invoice will be issued to you for course fee. Once this fee has been paid (this must be paid within 3 business days to secure your spot) an email verifying confirmation of your spot in the course and a receipt for payment will be sent.
