About the Assessment

All apprentices and individuals going through the Trade Equivalency Assessment are required to complete an Ontario Welder Practical Assessment prior to the written Welder Red Seal examination. Upon successful completion of both the practical assessment and the written examination, a Certificate of Qualification with a Red Seal Endorsement (RSE) will be issued.

Technical Training Group is a designated Welding Test Centre for Trade Equivalency Assessment applicants.  

Testing sessions are offered throughout the year over two nights and consist of two 4-hour testing blocks.

The Ontario Welder Practical Assessment includes:

  • Four welding processes (SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, GTAW)
  • Five weld plate test assemblies (visual and bend)  
  • One oxy-acetylene cutting test assembly (measurement and visual)

Exemptions: Welders who have proof of corresponding Canadian Welding Bureau or American Society of Mechanical Engineers certifications (CWB or ASME tickets) for any or all Tests 1 through 5, only have to complete the missing component(s) and the oxy-fuel cutting component of the practical assessment.

Program Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this testing, you will receive a proof of completion form/assessment sheet. You must then present this proof of Ontario Welder Practical Assessment testing when booking your Red Seal exam.

Testing Information

The TTG Test Centre is located at Stratford Secondary School, 428 Forman Avenue, Stratford, ON.

*Please Note: Photo ID and all tickets for exemptions must be submitted via email to TTG upon booking for documentation/verification. They must also be presented again in person on first night of testing.

Payment is required in full (once any exemptions are verified) to reserve a spot.

  • Ticket/Certification Verification for Exemptions and photo ID: Submit via email upon booking.
  • Testing Part #1: April 23, 2024 – 6pm-10pm

Welder Practical Assessment Pricing
Welder Practical Assessment:  

$580.00 for Full Assessment Testing, plus $100.00 plate deposit (will be reimbursed if not used)

Welder Practical Assessment Exemptions*:  

$100 per weld test and $80 for Oxy-fuel *minimum charge of $200.00 required, regardless of exemptions

  • $20 per additional plate (re-testing if required)
  • $100 plate deposit is required regardless of number of tests to be done (will be reimbursed if not used)

Proof of Certification/Tickets and Photo ID (Valid driver’s license) must be submitted by email  upon booking and must also be presented in person on both nights of the Welder Practical Assessment, for verification.
