About the Program

TTG’s General Machining Techniques program is a foundational course which is designed for individuals who want to gain essential general machining skills but are not registered as apprentices. Running concurrently with our Level 1 General Machinist in-class training, this program provides a pathway to explore and learn the fundamentals of general amchining.

Trainees will learn the theory and practical applications of various machining processes, blueprint reading, trade math and safety protocols. This course is ideal for career-changers, high school graduates, or newcomers looking to enter the Ontario manufacturing workforce.

It is expected that program graduates will be prepared to enter the workforce in an entry level General Machining postion following the completion of this program.

This program is divided into two semesters and a minimum overall grade average of 70% is required at the end of semester 1 in order to proceed to semester 2.

Prerequisites:  

Applicants must meet the following requirements for program consideration:

  • Canadian citizens: An Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD);  an Academic and Career Entrance (ACE) grade 12 Equivalency Certificate; an Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC); or be a Mature applicant.
  • Newcomers: Must be a Canadian Citizen; have Permanent Residency (PR) status; or have a PR application in progress; or be a Refugee. Must provide proof of Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level of 6 or higher in all areas, and educational equivalencies (i.e. ICAS or WES Assessment).
  • Must be able to provide your own PPE (safety glasses, steel toed boots, hearing protection). A list of all required PPE and tools will be provided upon registration confirmation.

Program Outcomes

Upon successful completion, trainees will:

  • Understand Trade practice and how to work safely in an industrial environment, adhering to OHSA and WHMIS standards.
  • Perform trade-related mathematical calculations and technical measurements using appropriate tools and devices.
  • Interpret trade-specific blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Have an understanding of metallurgy
  • Demonstrate basic proficiency in Metrology (Measuring and Checking), Benchworking Techniques, Metal Cutting Saw Technology, Drilling and Turning, Vertical Milling and Surfac Grinding
  • Be prepared for entry-level general machining roles and potentially transition into a formal Apprenticeship.

Seats are limited and filled on a first-come, first-served basis. (-- MACHINING TEST --)

  1. Online Application: Complete the General Machinist Techniques Registration Form via the link below. Application deadline:  September 14, 2026
  2. Documentation: We will contact you to request applicable documentation (proof of schooling, etc.) to confirm eligibility and we will discuss next steps.
  3. Payment: Once eligibility has been verified and confirmed, TTG will issue an invoice for Semester 1 schooling. Providing full payment for tuition and will secure your seat.

Admission Requirements  

To ensure trainee success, applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  1. Academic: Have and provide proof (including transcripts) of an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD);  an Academic and Career Entrance (ACE) grade 12 Equivalency Certificate; an Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC); or be a Mature applicant (minimum 19 years of age and out of secondary school for a minimum of 2 years).
    • To qualify as a mature student, you must be at least 19 years of age at start of program and have been away from secondary school for at least two years. A high school diploma is not required to apply. Completion of an academic assessment (math and or English) may be required prior to program acceptance.  
  2. English Proficiency: Applicants must be able to communicate effectively in English to ensure shop safety and understanding of technical theory.
  3. Physical Readiness: Ability to lift up to 40lbs/18.14 kg and work in a shop and manufacturing environment.
  4. PPE, Tools and Equipment: Must be able to provide your own PPE (safety glasses, steel toed boots, hearing protection). A list of all required PPE and tools will be provided upon registration confirmation.
Guidelines for Newcomers

Newcomers to Canada are welcome to apply based on the following criteria:

  • Language Assessment: Any applicants for whom English is not their first language must provide proof of English Language proficiency. A Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) minimum of level of 6 is required in all evaluated areas (Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing)  
  • Credential Assessment: Individuals with transcripts from outside Canada may require a course-by-course credential evaluation. You can request this through an approved provider such as ICAS or WES.  
Additional Requirements
  • Academic Assessment: Proof of an additional academic assessment (Math and or English) may also be required prior to program acceptance.
  • Interview: An in-person  Interview may be required prior to acceptance of application.
  • Academic Upgrading: This may be recommended to ensure program success.
